The role purpose.
We have a 12 month fixed term role as a parental backfill for a Senior Cloud Engineer to join us. You'll play a key role in designing, building, and operating Bupa’s cloud platforms at scale. This role focuses on enabling secure, reliable, and cost‑effective cloud services through automation, engineering standards, and modern platform practices. You will help evolve the cloud platform as an internal product, balancing governance and control with developer productivity. Working closely with architecture, security, DevOps, SRE, FinOps, and delivery teams, you will influence how cloud services are consumed across the organisation and help maximise the value of Bupa’s cloud investments. This is a senior hands-on engineering role with strong expectations around technical leadership, platform decision‑making, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Platform Engineering & Enablement
- Design, build, and evolve cloud platform capabilities using Infrastructure as Code and automation‑first principles
- Define and maintain cloud landing zone standards, guardrails, and reusable platform patterns
- Develop “golden paths” and self‑service capabilities that enable application teams to safely consume cloud services
- Balance governance, security, and compliance requirements with developer experience and productivity
- Continuously improve platform scalability, resilience, and cost efficiency
DevOps, IaC & Automation
- Own and evolve CI/CD patterns for platform and infrastructure code
- Build and maintain Azure DevOps pipelines using Terraform, Python and PowerShell
- Design and maintain reusable Terraform modules with strong standards around versioning, testing, and lifecycle management
- Champion everything‑as‑code practices, including policy‑as‑code and automated validation
- Review and uplift infrastructure and pipeline designs across the Cloud Services team
Reliability, Security & Operations
- Design platform services with reliability, availability, scalability, and recoverability as first‑class concerns
- Define and implement observability standards (monitoring, logging, metrics, alerting)
- Embed security and compliance into platform designs, pipelines, and defaults (secure‑by‑design)
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and post‑incident reviews
- Partner with Security and Risk teams to implement effective governance controls through automation
Consulting, Collaboration & Influence
- Partner with architecture, development, and operations teams to review cloud designs and recommend platform‑aligned solutions
- Support product and delivery teams in modernising and optimising applications for cloud‑native environments
- Act as a trusted advisor on cloud best practices, trade‑offs, and architectural decisions
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and technology vendors
- Actively contribute to platform roadmaps, standards, and engineering forums
Leadership & Mentoring
- Act as a technical leader within the Cloud Services team
- Mentor and support other engineers, uplifting platform capability and engineering maturity
- Lead by example in engineering quality, automation, and documentation
- Influence standards and best practices across the broader technology organisation
What you’ll need to make it possible
Required Experience
- Extensive experience designing, deploying, or operating cloud platforms or workloads at enterprise scale
- Deep hands‑on experience with Microsoft Azure, including:
- Landing zones and management group design
- Azure Policy, RBAC, and identity (Entra ID)
- Network and connectivity patterns (hub/spoke, private endpoints)
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform
- Proven experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and platform services
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including modular design, source control, and automated testing
- Experience designing for operational excellence, reliability, and security in cloud environments
Desirable / Beneficial Experience
- Exposure to AWS services and core concepts (IAM, VPC, accounts, Terraform)
- Experience applying cloud‑agnostic design principles in multi‑cloud environments
- Familiarity with cost optimisation and FinOps practices
- Experience contributing to or leading internal platform or shared services
Qualifications
- Microsoft Azure Associate or Expert certification (desirable)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence technical stakeholder
