The ADF Health Services team are responsible for providing integrated and seamless end-to-end health services such as primary and occupational healthcare, dental, physiotherapy, mental health and psychology services, pharmacy, occupational rehabilitation and health administration. We also support delivery of pathology, imaging and radiology, vocational rehabilitation, hospital, specialist, allied health, patient transport and other off base services enabled by Bupa systems.
About the Role:
Based at Defence Force Recruiting Headquarters in Canberra, the Senior Contracted Clinician plays a key leadership role, reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This is an in-office position responsible for providing expert medical advice, delivering training, and overseeing the technical supervision of Contracted Health Professionals within the Directorate of Recruiting Health Services (DRHS).
You will:
- Lead clinical and technical operations within DRHS, acting as the key contact for occupational medical assessments and entry standards.
- Drive service delivery against benchmarked standards, governance KPIs, and continuous quality improvement.
- Assess applicant medical suitability, including appeals and waiver decisions, in collaboration with Joint Health Command and Single Services.
- Train, mentor, and supervise Contracted Health Professionals to ensure compliance with ADF policies and clinical standards.
- Provide expert advice to senior medical leadership on staffing, performance, and professional conduct matters.
- Facilitate team meetings, training programs, and performance appraisals to support workforce capability.
- Maintain clinical currency in line with FRACGP guidelines and contribute to Defence accreditation processes.
About you:
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and values-driven leader, exemplifying Defence Values and Behaviours. They will lead and support a team of experienced medical professionals to achieve DFR’s operational goals, providing expert technical advice, supervision, and operational audit oversight. The role also requires delivering timely, accurate feedback to the CMO DFR, or their delegate, on emerging operational issues.
You will:
- be an adept relationship-builder with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Have solid management skills including leadership, conflict resolution and an understanding of medical ethics and medico legal issues;
You will also require:
- Australian citizenship
- A minimum of 5years Full-Time post graduate general practitioner (or part-time equivalent) experience as determined by RACGP and ACRRM;
- A minimum of 2 years Full-Time experience in general practice setting within the last 5 years (or part-time equivalent);
- Current unconditional and unrestricted registration as a specialist medical practitioner (including General Practice) in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
- Evidence of attainment of Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or equivalent suitable experience and training as assessed by Commander Joint Health Command (JHC);
- Post Graduate Qualifications in Health Management (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters, PhD or Doctorate), working toward same (is to be enrolled in post graduate course before commencement and show progress via submission of their academic transcript at the end of each semester) or has equivalent industry experience; and
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID009) certification or Equivalent Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification[ETD11]
