The Principal Environments Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, management, and optimization of IT environments to ensure they meet the needs of the organization. This position requires both technical expertise and leadership skills to guide teams and develop strategies for creating efficient, secure, and scalable environments, often delivered as Environment as a Service (EaaS).
The Principal Environment Engineer, specializing in application environments, plays a critical leadership role in the design, deployment, and management of scalable cloud and on-premises environments that support the lifecycle of application development, testing, and production. This position requires deep technical expertise in application-centric environments and leadership to drive the Environment as a Service (EaaS) initiative, ensuring application teams can quickly and easily provision, manage, and optimize environments. Maintains higher uptime and availability, introduces greater automation, self-serve capabilities for Environment activities such as build and refresh, optimise cost of environments by having on demand ephemeral environments, and a faster time to market by maintaining high quality IT environments and delivering reliable production releases. The candidate will have extensive experience in Azure Cloud – design & architecture, CI/CD, DevOps, Environments management, Kubernetes, and Agile experience.
The role is responsible for role modelling our ways of working, implementing complementary processes, and providing leadership to the group. This role will act as the thought leader, advisor and expert of IT environments who introduces greater level of automation and creates environment management strategies for large programs of work, engage effectively with stakeholders at multiple levels..
Your Contribution:
Establish IT Environments as a Service
- Deliver, uplift, and maintain high quality and fit for purpose Environment solutions for enterprise level Development, Testing and Production supporting CI/CD
- Support projects by ensuring the environments used by the project teams are always available, operational and reliable
- Self-Serve automated end to end environment provisioning by establishing on-demand ephemeral environments with automated scheduling and cost optimisation
- Support of Bupa’s service virtualisation capability to avoid having full stack environments
- Effective test data management with virtualisation and data masking
- Enterprise level environment capacity forecasting and planning
- Identify, investigate, and deliver on continuous improvement opportunities
- Ensuring best practices are followed, modern technologies, tools and processes are adopted, managing environment incidents, driving continuous improvement, engaging with product teams to validate solutions and address / mitigate risks & issues
Enhance Environments visibility and observability:
- Create and maintain below artefacts
- Environments Services Catalogue
- Environments Products Inventory
- Environments Components Dependency matrix
- Environments health check Dashboards for services availability
Continuous Availability:
- Maintain a high level of service for Projects, BAU activities, and continually improve existing services, through upgrades, tweaking, finding, and solving problems
Performance Optimization & Troubleshooting:
- Monitor and analyse the performance of application environments, ensuring fast and reliable app deployments.
- Lead the resolution of complex issues related to environment performance, scalability, or deployment errors.
- Conduct root cause analysis for application environment-related incidents and implement preventive measures
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Serve as a key liaison between environment engineering, application development, and operations teams to ensure seamless communication and environment readiness
- Partner with development teams to understand their environment needs and deliver tailored solutions for development, testing, and production stages
Stakeholder Communication & Reporting:
- Communicate environment health, performance, and usage metrics to key stakeholders, including development teams and leadership
- Build and manage relations with key delivery partners and technology suppliers
- Regular reporting on operational and service level performance
Qualifications, training & Experience
- 8-10+ years of experience in Azure cloud, environment engineering, or DevOps roles
- Extensive experience in systems and application development and engineering
- Extensive experience in Agile and DevOps methodologies and practices
- Analytical skills to troubleshoot application environment issues and drive solutions
- Innovative mindset with a focus on continuous improvement in environment management
- CI/CD Continuous Integration, Delivery and DevOps experience in – Microsoft Technologies
- Some experience with Container technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, AKS
- Release Management experience utilizing Azure DevOps or similar
- Experience in complex, large-team technical environments requiring prompt resolution and strategic actions
- Demonstrated success in managing internal stakeholders
- Experience in Agile SDLC methodologies and implementing quality processes
