We have an exciting 12-month fixed term opportunity for an experienced Engineering Practice Manager
The purpose of this job is
This role sits within the Engineering Enablement team and works in close partnership with Crew Delivery Teams, Engineering Managers, Quality Engineering, Architecture, and Program Leads. You will enable consistent, modern engineering practices across Bupa by setting clear standards, coaching teams, and providing pragmatic governance. Your impact will be seen through improved engineering maturity, stronger quality outcomes, and teams that feel supported to do their best work.
What You Will Do
- Define, evolve and champion engineering and quality engineering standards, guardrails and good practices in partnership with Architecture, Security, Platform and Quality Engineering teams.
- Support crews and Engineering Managers through coaching, guidance and influence to embed consistent engineering ways of working.
- Set clear standards for code commits, pull requests and build processes, enabling automation, transparency and continuous improvement.
- Develop and use meaningful metrics to understand engineering effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities.
- Own and maintain Engineering Controls with Technology Assurance and Risk, ensuring controls are practical, well‑documented and embedded in everyday work.
- Coordinate and perform control assurance activities including Controlled Self Assessments (CSA), identifying gaps and working collaboratively with teams to remediate them.
- Support audits by providing high‑quality evidence, insights and subject matter expertise, while continuously improving our control environment.
- Explore and promote the responsible use of AI to improve developer productivity and enable the delivery of AI‑enabled digital products for our customers and business.
- Work closely with Architecture, Platforms, Cloud & Operations and Domain teams to ensure alignment to Bupa’s technology strategy.
- Facilitate and chair the Engineering community of practice, supporting the governance and adoption of standards, tooling and best practices across Bupa.
- Stay current with engineering trends and share knowledge to help uplift capability across the organisation.
What you’ll need to make it possible
- Extensive experience (8+ years) working as a software engineer in large, complex enterprise environments.
- Strong background across digital, customer‑facing and API‑led architectures.
- Deep understanding of modern software engineering practices, software architecture and the SDLC.
- Hands‑on experience across full‑stack technologies including .NET, APIs, CMS platforms (e.g. Sitecore), frontend frameworks (React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS), databases, mobile and cloud platforms.
- Experience building and deploying applications using cloud services and DevOps practices (Azure, AWS or GCP).
- A passion for coaching, uplifting and enabling engineers to do their best work.
- Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively in matrix environments.
- Clear, confident communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts for non‑technical audiences.
- Experience in health, insurance or regulated industries is desirable but not essential.
