When I look back, I never planned to end up in aged care, but every step along the way has led me here.
I started my career in Dubbo with a local disability services organisation. I was studying at the time and working as a support worker, and I just never left. Fourteen years later, I’d worked my way through a range of leadership roles, from Team Leader to Service Manager, and eventually General Manager.
What kept me there was simple: people. I found a real passion for helping others and for creating environments where care and connection come first. My time “on the floor” shaped who I am as a leader today. It taught me that behind every strategic decision, there’s a person receiving that care and that perspective is something I’ll always carry with me.
After many years in disability, I wanted to broaden my skill set and challenge myself in a new environment. My family and I were ready for a lifestyle change, so when the opportunity came up to join Bupa and move to Newcastle, it just felt right. I’ve always been drawn to purpose-driven work, and aged care offers that same sense of impact; the chance to make a difference to people’s lives every single day.
I’m also proud to say I’m Bupa’s first First Nations General Manager. It’s not something I take lightly. Representation matters, especially for young people from regional and First Nations communities who might not see themselves in leadership roles yet.
Coming into a large global organisation, I expected it to feel a bit overwhelming. But honestly, the support I’ve received has been incredible. The onboarding process was so thorough, and I’ve felt connected from day one. I talk to my Regional Manager every day and am constantly learning from other GMs across the network. Even though we’re all spread out, it really does feel like one team.
For me, leadership is a privilege. You get to shape how people receive care, but also how your team experiences their day. How they come to work, how they go home, and how they feel while they’re here. That’s a huge responsibility, but also one of the most rewarding parts of the role.
My focus now at Bupa Waratah is on building a strong, positive culture; one where people feel supported, safe to share ideas, and proud of the care they deliver. When you have that, everything else starts to fall into place.
If I could tell my 16-year-old self something, it would be: don’t compare yourself to others, and don’t ever think you have a ceiling. I took a different path, but every experience has shaped who I am. And for young First Nations people, or anyone wondering if they can do it: you absolutely can. Don’t be afraid to lead.
Aged care is one of the most impactful careers you can choose. Every role, whether it’s in care, hospitality, or support, plays a part in helping people live better every day. And that’s something truly special to be part of.
