An exciting, permanent opportunity has become available for a Head of Data Platform and Operations.

This pivotal role optimises the data landscape, and continuously enhances data platforms and to ensure that data, data platforms and systems remain effective, operational and fit for purpose. This role is focused on the proactive management & maintenance (and daily operational running) of the data environment owned by enterprise technology team and leading and supporting initiatives to deliver on our regulatory obligations and mitigate risks from data. 

As a key technology team member, this role will ensure cohesive, efficient operations and alignment with Bupa's strategic objectives, managing data as a critical business asset by exemplifying financial acumen, data and resource optimisation. It is a hands role with a mix of strategic thinking to drive our efforts to optimise our data landscape, and tactical responsiveness to maintain the daily operational effectiveness of data platforms and systems. 

This role requires a “can do” and “get it done” attitude. Success will be defined by:

  • Transitioning, and accelerating, the business onto the new simplified data platform (BDP4)
  • Simplification and reduction of Bupa data platforms and systems to one source of truth (BDP4) 
  • Increasing optimisation and cost management/reduction of legacy estate 
  • Implementation of tools and processes that lead to better data governance and retention. 
  • Enabling the business to continue to run day to day data operations. 
  • Creating and establishing effective relationships with stakeholders, across all levels. 

How will I help?

This role requires a both a strategic and tactical mindset to transform Bupa: 

  • Strategic: the role will create the vision and lead the thinking of how to transform and optimise the data landscape at Bupa, spearheading continuous enhancements of our data platforms and simplify our data estate; including how we embed operational tooling/processes that enforce regulatory compliance. 
  • Tactical: the role will lead a team that is responsible for the operational management of the data estate and is responsive to data and platform operational issues and failures, with a focus on resolving to maintain “business as usual” operations. 

Other accountabilities include:

  • Design, lead and own the optimisation and management of Data platforms, ensuring alignment with the Bupa’s strategic goals and operational efficiency. 
  • Support the Chief Data Officer in driving for data transformation at Bupa; including the migration of data, processes, reports and users to the new data platform. 
  • Contribute to strategic direction of data within Bupa through collaboration with technology leadership team, stakeholder and the Data Program to ensure a unified approach to data across the organisation. 
  • Support the head of data engineering to identify opportunities for automation, including data ingestion, transformation, quality checks, and reporting. 
  • Lead and manage the Data Operations team, covering core competencies of: Enterprise Data Management, Data Operations, Data warehouse management, data visualisation delivery, incident and triage management aligned to regulatory requirements. 
  • Ensure the reliability / availability of data platforms, adhering to SLAs, particularly for business-critical processes, while monitoring, reporting, and managing incident, defect, and problem management. 

What do I need?

  • Relevant experience in the field of data, data technology, data engineering and data operations 
  • Proven experience in team management 
  • Professional qualifications, associations and membership 
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline 
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills, including presenting BUPAs journey at external conferences. 
  • Experience in delivering solutions via different project methodologies, including agile and waterfall.
