Bupa is seeking a highly capable Senior Manager – Health Insurance Operations Automations with a strong operational and technical mindset to join our Health Insurance business. This is a critical permanent, full-time opportunity based in Melbourne (hybrid, 2 days in office). Adelaide or Brisbane could also be considered.

In this senior leadership role, you will have end-to-end ownership of operational automations in HI Operations (non-core system automations), leading a team and managing offshore vendors to deliver, maintain, and optimise automation solutions. Your focus will be on stability, efficiency, and alignment to business priorities while balancing customer experience, operational performance, risk, and commercial outcomes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Operations and Enablement, this role is responsible for the end-to-end delivery, optimisation, and continuous improvement of Health Insurance operations automations. You will act as the operational owner of live automations, driving production stability, incident management, governance, and strategic alignment.

You will:

  • Lead the Operations Automation team and offshore vendor partners to manage and optimise operations automations, including robotic process automation (RPA) delivered via tools such as UiPath, Power Automate, and AI-enabled automation.   The automations need to support operations efficiency seamlessly
  • Ensure end-to-end testing, root cause analysis, and remediation of automation incidents, with a strong focus on operational stability and customer outcomes.
  • Create and prioritise (with endorsement from Operations General Managers and Director Operations and Enablement), and maintain a backlog of automation initiatives, defining release and sprint goals in alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Deploy new or updated automations, ensuring successful and seamless delivery (including end to end testing), performance against agreed STP and quality standards, and business case realisation.
  • Establish and govern an Operations Automation Command Centre to schedule, monitor, and escalate issues proactively.  Ensuring root cause understood and issues reduce overtime such that the operations automations enable operational efficiency seamlessly.
  • Build strong relationships with senior leaders across Health Insurance, Risk & Compliance, and Technology, providing thought leadership on the evolving role of non-core platform automation.
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes and operational efficiency through automation, applying human-centred design and lean principles to automation solutions.
  • Manage budgets, vendor performance, and onshore/offshore automation teams to maximise value delivery from automation initiatives.

Enterprise Impact & Accountability

This role is critical in ensuring operational automations run reliably and efficiently across Health Insurance Operations, enabling:

  • Minimised operational incidents and rapid incident resolution. Root cause understood to prevent repeat occurrences of incidents
  • Increased non-core platform automation efficiency, driving measurable operational cost savings.
  • Delivery of end-to-end, stable automation solutions aligned to business priorities.
  • Enhanced customer and consultant experience by removing operational friction.
  • Confident, informed decision-making by senior stakeholders regarding automation strategy and initiatives.

Success will be measured by operational stability, incident reduction, improved STP rates, and alignment of automation initiatives to business outcomes including achieving target FTE saves.

About You

You are an experienced automation and operations leader with a strong technical background, operational expertise, and a bias for action. You thrive in complex, fast-paced environments and can balance strategic priorities with operational execution.

You will bring:

  • 8+ years’ experience in operations automation, RPA, or process optimisation, preferably in Health Insurance or financial services.
  • Proven experience leading teams and managing offshore/onshore vendor relationships.
  • Strong operational knowledge, problem-solving, and root cause analysis capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex incidents, establish control environments, and deliver high-quality, end-to-end automation solutions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience influencing senior leaders.
  • Ability to prioritise, execute quickly, and act decisively under pressure.
  • Familiarity with tools such as UiPath, Power Automate, AI-driven automation, and production monitoring frameworks.

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Technology, or related discipline.
  • Program or project management certification (e.g., Agile, Scrum, PRINCE2) highly regarded.
