Why I joined Bupa’s RN graduate program
When Barsha first started working as a Carer at Bupa Bankstown aged care home, little did she know that four years later she’d be part of Bupa’s Registered Nurse Graduate Program to fast track her career.
“After completing my nursing degree in India, I worked in my home country Nepal for a year as a RN and then moved to Australia. While completing a Master of Nursing and a one-year conversion course to be able to work as a Registered Nurse here, I discovered the aged care sector. I was drawn to making a difference in the quality of life of the elderly. For me it’s so heart-warming to be part of people’s lives in their later years.
Just recently, a resident told me how blessed he feels to have all the care staff here, and that he’s so happy he decided to move into this Home. When he thanked me for my kindness, it was just another really powerful motivation for me to work in aged care. Those little moments motivate all of us here at the Home –we all feel happy to support our residents live their best life.
I love working as a RN. Every day is different. Every day when I come to work I’m learning new things.
While working as a carer, I heard about the RN Graduate Program from my GM, who suggested I apply for it. At first, I didn’t think it would be for me, but I thought about it, and decided ‘I’ll grab this opportunity.’
We’re now one month into the 12-month program, and I’m learning so much. The most important things I’ve learnt are about time management, processes, and how to prioritise. For example, what to do first when you go on rounds to see residents. Everything I’m learning is building my confidence. I can also see how helpful the program is for those RNs who don’t have an aged care background, such as new grads straight out of university.
As part of the graduate program I have a mentor. If anything happens or I have any questions, I can approach them without hesitation. That’s so helpful and makes me even more confident.
I’m so grateful to Bupa for this opportunity and to the whole team of educators who are teaching us so much. My mentor and the really experienced RNs and care managers at our Home are very generous with sharing their expertise.
I love working as a RN. Every day is different. Every day when I come to work I’m learning new things.
