The future of healthcare is becoming more personal

At Bupa, our purpose is to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives and make a better world. Genomics is an exciting part of that journey - enabling more personalised, proactive healthcare that puts people at the centre.

We’re investing in genomics because we believe healthcare should feel more personal, preventative and meaningful - helping people get care that better reflects who they are and what they need, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Pharmacogenomics and beyond

Advances in genomic science are changing how healthcare is delivered. From understanding disease risk to tailoring treatments, genetic insights are helping people make more informed decisions about their health.

At Bupa, we are investing in developing preventative genomics programs for important healthcare areas, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We are expanding access to pharmacogenomics, to help guide more effective medication choices, reduce side effects and improve outcomes. We are future-focused, considering how new genomic technologies, like polygenic risk score testing, can be delivered in clinically responsible ways. Genomic counselling is essential to making this science meaningful - turning complex data into clear, supportive guidance for customers.

The role of genetic counsellors

Genomics doesn't create value on its own. To be valuable, it needs to be understandable to every person. Genetic counsellors are essential here - enabling meaning-making, providing supportive guidance, and helping customers feel empowered to make meaningful healthcare decisions.

As a genomic counsellor, you’ll play a vital role in supporting our customers to understand their health at a deeper level.

We are looking for people who share our passion for care, and who combine clinical expertise with empathy to guide people through their genomic journey.

You will:

  • Provide clear, personalised guidance before and after genetic testing
  • Help customers understand how their genes may impact their health and treatment options
  • Translate complex genomic information into practical, everyday meaning
  • Work closely with GPs and healthcare teams to support care decisions
  • Support customers in making informed choices that align with their goals and values
  • Uphold the highest standards of privacy, ethics and patient care

Exploring what's next

As we continue to learn from our experience in genomics, we're exploring how genomic healthcare could be integrated into healthcare experiences in ways that are clinically responsible, accessible and meaningful for customers.

While this work continues to evolve, areas of interest include:

Genomic healthcare services

We're exploring how genomic insights could support people at different stages of their health journey, helping them better understand their health and access more personalised healthcare information and services.

Pharmacogenomics

Our pharmacogenomics pilot demonstrated strong interest from customers seeking to understand how their genes may influence responses to medications. We're continuing to learn from this experience as we explore future opportunities in medication optimisation and personalised care.

Preventative health

Genomics has the potential to support a more proactive approach to health by identifying opportunities for earlier intervention, informed lifestyle choices and personalised prevention strategies.

Clinical governance

As genomic healthcare evolves, robust clinical governance remains essential. We're committed to ensuring any future services are underpinned by clinical expertise, evidence-based practice and a strong focus on quality, safety and responsible use of genomic information.

Customer education and support

Genomic information can be complex. We’re working to support both customers and clinicians in turning insights into action: empowering individuals to make confident health decisions while enabling clinicians to integrate genomics into care. Genetic counsellors are central to this, translating complexity and building capability across the clinical community to unlock the full potential of genomics.

Genetic counselling integration

Genetic counsellors play a vital role in helping people understand and act on genomic information. We're considering how genetic counselling expertise could support future genomic healthcare services, ensuring genomic information is delivered with empathy, context and person-centred care.
